24 Jul The imposing truffle “Eco”
We are learning that the history of truffles has ancient origins and that they are mentioned through the whole history. The black truffle is also quoted in the first and famous novel by Umberto Eco, “The name of the rose”, set in 1327, in a Middle Ages in which for the most part the truffle remains mysterious to the point of feeding legends.
In the book Eco makes Adso say: “I remember that later in the years a gentleman grown near the place I was born, knowing that I knew Italy, asked me the reason why he saw peolple bring pigs to graze, and I realized that instead they went in search of truffles. I explained to him that they searched for “truffles” under the ground to eat, but he understood that they were searching for “der Teufel”, that id the devil, and he gazed at me in astonishment! Then the misundertanding melted and we both laughed”.
